The Sydney University Dramatic Society Presents:
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

“I will tell you quite frankly that I have no brother Ernest. I have no brother at all. I never had a brother in my life, and I certainly have not the smallest intention of ever having one in the future.”

Jack Worthing created the identity of his fictional brother Ernest in order to escape his own mundane life and woo the woman of his dreams. Now that he may finally have her, he has decided to confess his true identity and kill off his ‘brother’ for good. It’s the perfect plan. That is, until fellow bachelor Algernon decides to show up at his country estate, also claiming to be Mr Ernest Worthing.

Originally performed in 1895, Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People” is widely considered to be the ultimate comedy of manners, examining the triviality of social conventions and obligations against the backdrop of polite society.
